I think bunnies, in their heads, believe they are flying. Just look at those binkies and zoomies! The ears in lops' case help them with aerodynamism, and by the looks of it, they are having a blast pretending they are planes!
He's going into that corner at full speed and so he's using his ears to balance out all the air around him so he can get through that corner and take off without slipping. River is so little if she learned Simon's technique to go at top speed she'd probably be able to lift off and glide!

So true--their ears always crack me up when they're hopping/running! They're either flapping like bird wings or they're out like little propellers. :)
