You can do it!

If you say so.
If her carrot-stained cheeks are anything to go by, not even Mr. Giraffe is buying that one. I just noticed that her pile of freshly cleaned bunny laundry is almost as tall as she is. That little munchkin can go through some towels!

The search continues.
River: Big human is cool--I can't pee those. Keep looking. Little human's slippers have got to be around here somewhere!
Mr. Giraffe: We've been searching for her slippers for weeks now. Couldn't you just pee on a few packages of what seem to be Christmas presents instead?
River: Dude. I'm pretty sure Santa would put us both on the 'naughty list' permanently if I did that. I don't know about you, but I like candy and presents!
Mr. Giraffe: Fair point. I'll keep looking.

Hoppy Thanksgiving! 🦃
We're thankful that the little munchkin is eating on her own and feeling a lot better! Wishing a very Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it and a happy Thursday to everyone else!

A well-deserved treat!
Not gonna lie, this was a bit nerve-wracking at first, but we did it as a team with big human holding and giving noogies, Mr.Giraffe, Esq. for emotional support/legal purposes, and me playing the role of bunny nurse.
River's feeling a lot better and hopefully we won't need to give fluids too often (if at all) fairly soon. She's been eating very well on her own and has been much perkier the past few days giving nose-bonks and begging for treats! I think giving her a full dose of probiotic (BeneBac plus powder in carrot baby food) 3 hours after every dose of antibiotic (Baytril) is replacing any of her good gut flora that the antibiotic is wiping out, so she isn't having the nasty gut issues/GI stasis she had the last time she was on antibiotics. She's also on gabapentin twice a day, which has helped with her arthritis and appetite.
For a bun who turns 12 next month, her quality of life has greatly improved and it's awesome to see! 💕
Here's a great video of how to give sub-q fluids to rabbits that I found useful even after getting a demo in the vet's office:

Google is letting me post pics like normal now, so I'm going back through my posts since Nov. 9th and re-posting the pics so they should show up on your phones as they should.

Givin' the world bunny butt today.
No, I will not come out of here willingly.
River is so over this whole vet visit stuff. The little munchkin took her second round of sub-q fluids like a champ and was very patient as the vet tech showed us how to do it ourselves. She graciously accepted a banana chip as payment when we got home.

Baytril is made of yuck!

Good news!
I heard from the vet today and he said that River's kidney results were normal, so it's not kidney failure! Due to her globulin levels being increased, he suspects she has an infection (UTI) and is prescribing her Baytril, which I'll pick up tomorrow.
He also wanted to ensure she stays hydrated, so is going to show me and big human how to give subcutaneous fluids (it's a two person job). This will save her the stress of a car trip and vet visit.
Her calcium levels were a bit high, though that is most likely due to diet (alfalfa is in the critical care mix as well as some of the hay cubes since she doesn't really try to eat actual hay anymore). He said at her age, we pick our battles and it'll just be something to keep tabs on--I'll try to increase the timothy pellet portion of her paste mix and the bunny Ensure mix.

She is so gonna pee in my shoes for this.
Do you know how they take temperatures here?!
River was acting a bit agitated, peeing a bit more than usual, and wasn't eating or drinking well on Thursday, so we wanted to get her looked at. I suspected she was dehydrated and fed a more liquid version of her paste, offered more fresh veggies and a critical care-pellet-water 'bunny Ensure' that she happily ate on her own. We couldn't get an appointment until Saturday morning, but she had started eating better on Friday so we had that going for us.
She was a very good girl at the vet and got some subcutaneous fluids for the dehydration. The vet was happy to hear about her being fed the paste food and 'bunny Ensure'. They also took some blood for analysis which the vet tech said, "She took that like a champ!" They're checking to see how well her kidneys are functioning and looking for any age-related metabolic issues. We should get the results early this week.
River is feeling a lot better and is eating well on her own. I've been making sure to offer lots of the 'bunny Ensure' to try to get more liquids into her along with extra calories, which she is loving and tries to pull the feeding syringe out of my hands!

Cranky bun.
We had to do some slight alterations to River's cage so she could move around a bit easier. She was having trouble navigating the jump into her litter box and it was getting to be a challenge to keep things sanitary. We have paper bedding everywhere but her spaceship and her food is all in the same place as usual, just up on folded washcloths to keep the bedding out of them.
River is not a fan of this change. Fingers crossed she adjusts fairly quickly!
(Also, please ignore the marks on my thumbnail. I use that to get consistent stitches when sewing.)

I made a thing!
This is Mom's chipmunk. The little guy has been climbing up the fence and watching Mom at her computer as though she were his TV since at least 2018. She'd always get the biggest kick out of seeing the little guy and would wave to him. Dad still sees him up there daily looking in the window for her.
This raw-edge appliqué was self-drafted and all sewn by hand. The stitches going around everything are 1mm apart. I learned a lot about how to use (and not use) double sided fusible interfacing with this project. Overall, it took about a month to complete my first attempt at making a pillow.Friday, October 20, 2023
