My guess is that River was testing her theory about opening up an inter-dimensional portal and it actually worked. Simon is hiding behind his personal protection paper fort for safety.
It was funny, they were both synchronized as they looked at the same spot. Simon was playing with the paper and suddenly stood up to look over there.
